RTMS Parking Lot Project

In the summer of 2022, the parking lot at River Trails Middle School underwent a much-needed renovation. It included the installation of permeable pavers and rain garden, which offer several benefits to the district and community. The permeable paver parking lot was previously installed at Euclid and Prairie Trails.

Why permeable pavers?

  • Significantly reduces the amount of stormwater runoff, which is better for the environment and helps enhance water quality
  • More durable than tradition asphalt, increasing the lifespan of the lot and saving money on repaving and other repairs
  • Skid resistant, making the lot safer in the winter and when it rains

How was the project funded?

A partnership with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) helped to offset the cost of the parking lot. The MWRD contributed $650,000 toward completion of the project.

What is a rain garden?

A rain garden is a depressed area in the landscaoe that collects rain water and allows it to soak into the ground. It is not only cost-effective, but also helps promote infiltration and reduce downstream flooding. Rain gardens protect the environment and community!
