In the spring of 2015, Illinois students participated in a new state assessment called the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam, in English language arts and math. The PARCC assessment replaced the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) and marked a significant change from these previous assessments. In spring of 2019 the assessment changed again to the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). The change was less significant than the previous transition as the question bank remained consistent.
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness is given to all students third through eighth grade in the Spring of each school year. This assessment evaluates student progress on the Illinois Learning Standards. All students in grades 3-8 are tested in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Students in 5th and 8th grades take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA). The ISA aligns with our new Illinois Learning Standards in science which are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The ISA represents Illinois’ commitment to preparing all students for college and careers, including in the high-demand science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The ISA is designed to reflect classroom experiences.
These exams are valuable tools to measure our progress. No test provides a complete picture of student performance, and the exam results are one of many factors that we use to measure progress. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to your child’s academic growth and success.
