Influenza Information

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Flu season is upon us. We have an increase in influenza at our schools, so we are providing information on signs, symptoms and transmission of influenza.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Flu symptoms appear rapidly and include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Feeling tired
  • Sometimes vomiting or diarrhea

TRANSMISSION

The flu (influenza) is caused by a virus and spreads from person to person by coughing, sneezing or talking. People can also get the flu by touching their mouths, noses and eyes after touching a surface that someone has coughed or sneezed on.

GENERAL MEASURES

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
  • Eat healthy foods, drink plenty of fluids and get a good night’s sleep
  • Regular hand washing. The most effective way is:
    1. Wet hands with water
    2. Apply soap
    3. Scrub hands for 20 seconds
    4. Rinse hands

Students may not return to school until their temperature is less than 100.4° for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication, such as Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, etc.) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol). Please note that many cough and cold medications contain one of these medications. If your child has tested positive for influenza or Covid, please let the health office know. Thank you for helping to keep our students healthy and safe!

Sincerely,
Dr. Carie Cohen
