RTMS Update

UPDATE AT 4:30 P.M.

Dear River Trails Parents and Guardians,

I am following up with an update regarding the situation at River Trails Middle School. The social media post in question was on TikTok over the weekend and contained only the words “August 26” tagged with an unsettling song. Though the message was vague, there was concern that there could be a possible underlying threat to the message.

In partnership with Mount Prospect Police, we identified the student responsible for the post and determined that there was no further risk to the school. We will continue to follow our threat assessment and discipline procedures as we work through the situation. Due to confidentiality laws, the student’s identity and any potential discipline will not be disclosed.

Again, I would like to thank the families who communicated with us when they saw the TikTok post. I would also like to thank those who reached out following my earlier email. One of my goals as superintendent is to be as transparent as possible, especially when it comes to student safety. Your feedback is always valued.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at jmegerle@rtsd26.org.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jodi Megerle
Superintendent of Schools

Dear River Trails Parents and Guardians,

I want to make you aware that over the weekend, we learned about a post on social media pertaining to River Trails Middle School. We take this very seriously and are working with the Mount Prospect Police Department to investigate further. At this point, we do not feel that there is a risk to anyone in our buildings.

Thank you to those who brought the post to our attention. I would like to remind all families that safety is a collective effort and we need to work together to keep our community safe. We encourage anyone who hears anything or sees anything suspicious to report it immediately.

Expect to see an increased police presence around the school throughout the week. This is out of an abundance of caution and will not cause a disruption to our regular schedule at RTMS, or any of our other schools.

Thank you for your help in continuing to keep our schools safe.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jodi Megerle
