Block Schedule

This school year, we are shifting to a block schedule format. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the change:

What is a block schedule?

A block schedule consists of alternating classes across two days. There will be five 75-minute blocks on each day. There will continue to be an advisory and lunch period each day.

How does the block schedule differ from what RTMS has had in the past?

Previously the school has used a traditional schedule in which students attend every class on their schedule, covering 10 periods every day.

How will the new schedule work?

The schedule will consist of five alternating class periods across two days. There will be 75 minutes of instructional time in each block. ELA and math will occur every day, while all other classes will alternate. There will also be a 30-minute lunch period and 15-minute advisory period every day. Passing periods will be three minutes. The school day will continue to run from 7:40 a.m. to 2:58 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Thursdays will still be a late arrival day with a modified schedule.

What are the benefits of a block schedule?

According to reasearch, there are several benefits to block scheduling. These include:

  • More time for academic intervention
  • More time for in-class hands-on learning
  • More opportunities to implement project-based learning, differentiation, labwork, reflection and active learning
  • Increased opportunities for teachers to build relationships with students
  • Increase in instructional math time
  • Reduction in student stress
  • Reduction in number of class tardies
