Prairie Trails Wins Award - 2023

Prairie Trails Wins Award - 2023

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) announced that Prairie Trails School is one of two winners of this year's Illinois Green Ribbon School Award.

The annual award recognizes schools and districts for their dedication to sustainability. Prairie Trails is one of two winners of the award, along with District 158 in Algonquin. ISBE also nominated Prairie Trails for national recognition, which is announced by the U.S. Department of Education in April.

“Prairie Trails is thrilled to be recognized for our efforts to promote environmental sustainability and responsible global citizenry,” Prairie Trails Principal Amy Veytsman said. “Our students are at the heart of these efforts, and we hope this spotlight inspires schools across Illinois and beyond of what is possible for generations ahead.”

Prairie Trails opened in 2021 after undergoing major renovations that made it the first net-zero energy building in Mount Prospect. The project included the addition of solar panels, a permeable paver parking lot, and an improved heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. These features were part of RTSD26's ongoing commitment to sustainability.

“A safe and healthy future for our children requires forward-thinking green initiatives,” State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders said. “ISBE is proud to highlight two exceptional schools that are leading by example and whose efforts to reduce environmental impact, improve health and wellness, and offer sustainability education are deserving of national acknowledgment.”
