River Trails Parents
and Students,
It is an absolute honor
to be the new principal at River Trails Middle School. I’ve heard so
many wonderful things about the families and staff here; I’m excited to
be a part of something so special. For the past two school years I
served as principal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. K-8 Laboratory School
in Evanston District 65. While I will miss my former colleagues,
parents and students, I am thankful for this opportunity to live closer
to the school community in which I work. My wife and I reside in nearby
Arlington Heights along with our two children Owen (10) and Kay (3). This is a very exciting transition for our family. District 26 is
highly regarded with a fine reputation for its commitment to children
and education. Mr. Rogers is happy to be in this neighborhood.
Attitudes are generally
shaped through an individual’s experiences. As a “Hoosier” born and
raised in Michigan City, Indiana, basketball became a way of life for
me. My coaches transformed a thirty-two minute game into a lifetime of
extremely useful character principles. Throughout the years I have
found these lessons to be applicable in many different settings,
especially in the school setting.
“Intelligence plus
character-that is the true goal of education.” I admire this Dr. King quote because of its relevance to
our job as educators. Schools are obligated to sustain a learning
environment that holds everyone to a high standard of academic
performance and character. Each River Trails student has the potential
and responsibility to exhibit excellence in one form or another. And
because we have these high expectations, we will support our students by
defining what it means to be an excellent student and acknowledging them
when they strive to succeed in that way. Responsibility takes on
many forms in school. Please consider the following examples of how
responsibility manifests in school life. If our students fulfill these
duties on a regular basis, they will be empowered to make decisions that
benefit their future.
ACADEMICS
Learning is paramount,
thus academic pursuits are a top priority. An excellent student is not
solely defined by grades; however a strong “work ethic” is definitely
part of the equation. Schools thrive when students collectively give
their very best effort. Students have a responsibility to participate,
produce and create within their school community.
RESPECT
Because learning is a
social process, one of my goals is to encourage and challenge our
students to recognize how they impact each other within the school
culture. They have a moral and ethical responsibility to show respect
towards everyone at River Trails. Students are obligated to use good
judgment and common sense at all times. If students collectively
respect and value their educational opportunities; distractions will be
at a minimum.
COMMUNITY
Students have a
responsibility to keep their community safe and healthy. Physical
and/or emotional threats have no place at River Trails Middle School. Students have a responsibility to communicate in a way that contributes
to a positive climate. Schools are in place so teachers can instruct,
allowing students to grow academically and socially. Behavior that
attempts to negate or hinder learning will be dealt with quickly. Students also have a responsibility to engage themselves within their
community. There are many extra curricular activities and programs
available for all students at River Trails.
2008-2009
We have several
renovation projects underway within our building. The Learning Center
will have a new look along with an updated computer lab. Students will
see an increase in the types of technology being used in classrooms. Most of the restrooms are receiving a much needed facelift. We will
also have new floors and lockers in most areas of the building. In
addition, the River Trails Park District will be adding recreational
features including a softball field to enhance our school grounds on the
outside. But of course it’s not just the physical attributes that make
River Trails a great place to learn; it’s the people and programming.
The staff at River
Trails is dedicated to providing a learning environment that inspires
students. We want students to feel good about what they are learning.
Students should bring their dreams and aspirations into the classrooms
having confidence that they will one make a difference in the world.
Beginning August 26th,
our students will make fresh discoveries and consider new
possibilities. They will construct new thoughts based on experiences
that begin the first day of school. The stage is set for 2008-2009 to
be an exciting year of focus and fun.
