Homework is great for providing students with the opportunity to practice skills and develop good study habits.  It’s also a chance for them to engage intellectually outside of class, access resources, and read independently.  This year, we are incorporating a mandatory summer homework assignment for all middle school students.  Each middle school student must choose one novel to read over the summer.  Students have two books from which to choose (SEE BELOW).   There is a homework assignment associated with the novel.  The assignment is enclosed.  Each student is expected to submit a completed assignment on Wednesday, August 26th.  This is a graded assignment so it’s an opportunity to get off to a great start.  Again, students need only choose one of the novels listed below.  Please note that students participating in specialized academic programs such as special education, strategic reading or ELL will have designated novels.  We will notify all special education, strategic reading and ELL students at a later time as to which book they will read.

About the author

Ask Me No Questions
by  Marina Budhos

We are fortunate to have the Author of the novel Of Beetles and Angels Mr. Mawi “As Gay Dom” come and speak to our 8th grade class on Friday September 11th of this year.

Because this is a special occasion, I believe it will be in your best interest to read “Of Beetles and Angels” this summer to enhance the experience of meeting the author.

I know this only gives you a few weeks if you did not choose this book.  You will not be penalized if you are unable to read it but it will help you understand the theme of the authors visit when he speaks to the 8th grade.   If you are able to read both books, you are only required to complete one home work assignment.

I appreciate your flexibility and willingness to grow academically over the break.  Take care and enjoy the rest of summer.

It is the responsibility of parents and students to obtain the novel.  The Mount Prospect Public Library will have limited copies of the novels; Borders and other book retailers will have copies for sale.  Parents can purchase their novel at a reduced rate through Mrs. Hankey in the River Trails Learning Center.  Mrs. Hankey has arranged to sell the books as a fundraiser for the Learning Center.
