Eighth grade math includes two different classes—Algebra and Pre-Algebra.  The following information applies to both classes:

· Pencils and calculators are needed every day for class as well as for homework.

· Homework is given every night.  Most assignments are worth two points for completion.  Approximately once a week, an assignment will be collected and graded for correctness.  The point value of these assignments will vary, depending on the assignment, but usually they will be worth between 5 and 10 points.

· For each chapter or unit, there will be several quizzes worth 10 to 30 points, and one unit test worth between 60 and 100 points.  A chapter or unit takes between 3 and 6 weeks to complete.  Review sessions are held the day before a test during class time.  Students may wish to come in at 7 AM the morning of the test for additional review.

· Extra help is available most mornings before school at 7 AM and after school until 3:50 PM.  My schedule for the week is posted in my room.  Please encourage your student to come in to get help whenever necessary and not wait until he/she is completely lost.  Students who cannot complete their homework because they don’t “get it” should plan to come in and get help so the assignment can be completed on the day it is due.  An assignment that is not understood will most likely lead to difficulties with the next day’s assignment.

· Limited extra credit opportunities are available each quarter.  However, students should not count on extra credit for major grade boosts.  Good daily work habits and homework completion will enhance learning and maintain grades at a sufficient level.
