River Trails Middle School

Treats for Troops Service Project

Upon entering River Trails Middle School, sixth graders become a part of our learning community. Supporting the students and staff in our community is very important, but supporting the greater community, our nation, is just as important. This year we have decided to help by supporting our soldiers who are abroad protecting our country. Students will be pen pals to a troop of soldiers being deployed overseas this November. In addition to letter writing, students will be collecting treats to send over in care packages.

Schedule

October: Staff Sergeant Liam Cormier, leader of the troops we are writing, spoke to students about his experiences serving away from home.

November 24th: The troop leaves for overseas.

February 2009: The troop comes home.

Letters:  Students will be writing letters throughout the school year and sending them to our troop.

Care packages:  Students will be collecting items all year for our care packages.  Once a month during lunch, students will be able to purchase items with their spare change.  These items will be added to the boxes to be shipped over seas.

Shipping: We plan on shipping care packages December 19th, March 14th, and June 4th.
