Literature

Students will read short stories, plays, articles, poems, and novels throughout the year.  Some of these will be student choice and some will be required.  We will read both fiction and non-fiction writing.  We will focus on the elements of fiction, vocabulary, and higher level thinking skills.

Literature circles are apart of the curriculum.  Students are expected to read, discuss, analyze, and present to the class what they have learned as a group.  These are entirely student driven and do require good listening, speaking, and cooperating skills.  Students are expected to help each other interpret the literature.

Students will be expected to read no less than 400 minutes a month September through May.  Calendars will be given out monthly and parents are required to sign that minutes have been completed.  A monthly book report will be a part of this reading calendar.

Language Arts

Writing is the main focus of our language arts class.  Students will create narrative, expository, and persuasive writings throughout the year.  They will be evaluated on the Six Traits Writing Rubric which covers the following areas: ideas, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, organization, and conventions. Students will be expected to evaluate their peers and their own writing using this rubric.

In addition, students will learn about new vocabulary, the parts of speech, punctuation, and sentence structure.  They will create their own poetry and learn about figurative language.

Books

Students will be given two text books and two workbooks that must be returned at the end of the school year.  The text books can be kept at home as classroom copies are available.  However, the workbooks must be brought to class every day.
